Double Digits!!

Dear Katie,

Today you turn 10!!!  Bring on the double digits (just maybe not the preteen/teenage years).

You -- sweet Katie -- are our reader, swimmer, and crafty creative. I love your wit, kindness, and steady/observant approach to life. While the rest of us are rushing at 90 mph, you are stopping to smell the roses — which means you see the little things we often miss. Some days I don't understand or appreciate your pace.  Even after 10 years, I'm still working on that one.

This year you will be in 5th grade and rule all of Elementary.  This is also a decade where you will distance yourself from us (slowly at first, then oh so fast).  You are an August birthday, and I often think how in a few more Augusts you will leave us for college (we hope).

One of my favorite questions to ask your father is "What do you think she will be when she grows up?"  The answer changes - and we haven't a definite guess yet.  Your answer is almost always "a teacher."  No matter your choice, I think you have an amazing future before you.

You are such a joy, and a kind soul! Your father and I are so thankful for you!!
Happy, Happy Birthday Katie Bug!! 🎉🎂

Baby J Turns 5!

Dear Jenna,

Today you turn 5!  Such a big number --- 5.  And Big changes come with it this year.  You start Kindergarten in the fall.  No more preschool.  No more half days.  No more Tuesdays and Thursdays, just us together --- for gymnastics, dance, trips to the playground, the pool, the museum ---- or brunch at IHOP, just because we can -- and also, you love pancakes.  Your life now starts to speed up.  And with it I know the years will pass even more quickly than this current hectic pace.

You continue to amaze us!  You have the ability to find joy in the smallest aspects of everyday life - getting a job at preschool, seeing a friend at the store, or simply waking up to find its a warm sunny day.  One of your favorite sayings is "best day ever" - which is uttered almost daily - and pronounced "Best Day Eva", because those "R"s are still a little tricky!

You are kind and encouraging, with compassion and empathy for others which I pray never leaves you.  You are also sassy, full of mischief, exhaustingly independent, fiercely competitive, and LOVE potty humor (please let that be a short phase!).  You talk CONSTANTLY --- from the moment you wake, to the moment you sleep. And this reminds me of your Papa - DAILY!

We asked your preschool teacher recently, "Is Jenna ready for what will come this fall (KINDERGARTEN)?"  Your teacher's response was "Strap a pair of wings on her mama, and just watch her fly."

So, here's to flying at 5!  Just remember, we will continue to be your soft place to land.

Love, and Birthday Wishes!

Winter Wonderland - December 2018

This past week, there was snow in the forecast --- which is unusual for Richmond, VA in early December.  Forecasts indicated we would get 1-3 inches which we felt was just enough to play for a day - and then get back to normal.  AND the forecast was REALLY WRONG!!!  When the storm was finished we got approximately 13 inches at our home.

The girls LOVED it!  They woke up around 8 AM on Sunday, noticed the first flakes were flying, and immediately got dressed and went outside to play.  It snowed throughout the day and finally finished up around 10ish in the night.  We placed a 12 inch ruler on the patio table on the back deck and by the end, the ruler was completely buried.

On Monday --- the whole family got a snow day (even DADDY!!!).  Matt's office is NEVER closed so it was such a treat to be able to go sledding together.  We came back for hot chocolate and a movie.  Then finished up our day by decorating our Christmas tree (which was a task long overdue).

Our family of four LOVES snow days.  We are all hoping for a couple more good snow storms through this 2018/2019 winter season.  And maybe on the next one, we will get to hit the ski slopes.

Including a few sledding videos...

Birthday Redo

Yesterday is a day I will not soon forget.  For 3 months, Katie had declared her next birthday party would be a pool party.  To ensure our big girl got her party wish --- we started early.  I booked our clubhouse pool in the neighborhood almost 2 months in advance.  We got pool party themed invitations, Hawaiian lays, flip flop banners, and even made Pool Punch.

Then at 11 AM yesterday morning --- the day of her party --- the manager of our neighborhood pool called and informed us that, overnight, someone had vandalized the pool by throwing glass bottles over the fence and onto the pool deck.  The glass was shattered both on the deck and into the pool.  The pool management company was in the process of draining the pool, and unfortunately it would not be open for at least 2 days.

Katie stood beside me while I took the phone call and could hear portions of what was said.  I said, Katie --- "I have some news can you please sit down so we can talk".  I also called Matt into the room because I was pretty sure we had a bit of a crisis on our hands.  Sure enough, she LOST it when we told her.  Tears were streaming down her face, and she went into the bathroom to wash her face while the tears continued.

While she was in the bathroom Matt and I talked about what we could do -- including some alternatives.  We finally got her to come out of the bathroom and talk to us.  And then the Birthday Redo began.

We discussed 3 options with her:  1)  Stay at the clubhouse, but without the pool.  We could do games and maybe rent a bouncy house (if available on short notice).  2)  Switch the location to UpTown Alley -- a fancy bowling

spot with arcade included.  3)  Switch the location to Pocohontas State Park's outdoor water park.

After a fair bit of discussion and SEVERAL phone calls to make arrangements we landed on Pocohontas State Park - because to quote our girl, "I really want to play in the water with my friends."  It was far from perfect, and an absolute scramble to get everything revised in the course of a couple of hours (not the least of which was notifying the guests --- thank goodness for text capability!!!)  But it worked out okay.

Katie, Matt, and I had a long talk at the end of the day.  There were a few big life lessons to be discussed in the days events.  First lesson: Sometimes you will make plans and have your heart set on something, and then something out of your control will change it all.  In that moment, you are going to have two options:  roll with the changes and make the most of it, or let it rattle you and ruin your plans.  Today, after a moment of panic and disappointment, our girl chose to roll with it and she ended up having a great evening with her friends and family.  For that, I'm so proud of her.

Second life lesson:  We were guessing that the vandalism at the pool was likely a group of teenagers.  Earlier in the summer a group had poured bubble soap into our neighborhood fountain and the bubble overflow was EVERYWHERE.  So, we had a discussion of pranks that cause no one harm, versus those that have serious consequences.  In this case, it will required between $5,000 and $10,000 to fix our pool, not to mention families cannot attend until its repaired.  She's not so far from the teenage years....and somehow, I want her to know the difference between harmless and harmful pranks.

Third life lesson:  Forgive the person who did the vandalism.  Whatever happened, I'm pretty sure the person, or people, who did the damage are likely now regretting their actions.  Video cameras are posted all around our neighborhood pool and I'm almost certain the culprits are caught.  We told Katie they weren't thinking about her pool party at the time they threw the glass over.  They were likely dared by a friend --- or just doing something they shouldn't.  Either way, we've all done something we shouldn't at one point in time in life or another.  Forgive them, and move on.

Included in this post are some pictures from the day ---- the good part, not the tears at the beginning.  Ha!  I'm so proud of our sweet Katie Bug.  She showed some big girl maturity yesterday --- and an ability to roll with unforeseen circumstances, even when it was NOT what she wanted.

K-Kids Induction Ceremony

During the first week of December, Katie was inducted into the K-club at school.  K-Club is a service organization which teaches children at a very early age the important of volunteering and giving back to the community and school --- especially to individuals in need.

To become a member Katie had to first complete an application.  Then the 3rd grade teachers reviewed each student application in order to select who would be selected to participate.  I was so grateful Katie was selected because she had her heart set on joining.  The big smile on her face says it all!!!  Included

Service projects will begin in the new year and I'm curious to see just how much these little elementary school students tackle.  I'm so proud of our sweet girl!!  She has a truly kind, giving nature about her.

Jenna's Christmas Performance

What a joy it was to watch Jenna in her preschool Christmas performance.  She had been singing the songs for weeks at home and we finally got to see her in action.  She loved being on stage and having us there to cheer her on.

Sharing a few videos and pictures from her big night!!  (some of the videos aren't uploading....hmm --- I'll have to work on that!!).

Family Fall Photos

Sharing a few of our family photos from our recent fall session.
